About “COTOREES”
スマートフォンや家電を操作するときに、あなたはタッチパネルを触りますか？それとも声をかけますか？ 音声アシスタントやVPA（Virtual Personal Assistant：仮想パーソナルアシスタント）と呼ばれる、人と機械とが声でやりとりをするインターフェースが増えてきています。AI（Artificial Intelligence：人工知能）の一般化が進むにつれて、ますますキーボードやタッチパネルよりも音声によるやり取りのほうが普通になっていくでしょう。映画のように音声アシスタントと恋に落ちる時代が、もうすぐそこまで来ています。
そんな未来のちょっと前に、テキパキなんでもできる人型アシスタントとは別の道もあるのでは？と私たちは考えました。有能ではないけれど、単機能で簡単に使える、人型ではない音声アシスタント…。人の声を真似ることができる生き物 “鳥” にヒントを得て、私たちは”COTOREES（コトリーズ）”を開発しました。
COTOREESは、あなたの声で働くかわいい鳥型コンピューター。うんと賢くはないけれど、話しかけるだけで誰にでも使えるペットのような存在です。なんでもできるわけではないけれど、まるでアプリが現実世界に出てきたかのように、キャラクター毎に異なる機能が割り当てられています。手が離せない朝にお天気を教えてくれる鳥、ちょっと知りたいことを調べてくれる辞書の鳥、ちょっとしたひと言を訳してくれる翻訳鳥。卓上に置いて話しかけたり、アクションカム用の市販アタッチメントを使って肩やベビーカーに乗せて連れ出したりすることを考えて、ワイヤレス仕様を想定しています。
When using your smartphone or home electronics, do you use a touchscreen or your voice? Interfaces enabling you to communicate with devices via voice, such as Voice Assistant and VPA (Virtual Personal Assistant) apps, are becoming very common. Once AI (Artificial Intelligence) becomes more widespread, communicating using your voice instead of a keyboard or touchscreen will be the norm. The era when humans fall in love with voice assistants, just as in the movies, is just around the corner.
Just ahead of such a future, in which we find humanoid assistants that can do everything for you, we thought, “Is there another path?” Instead of a multi-talented humanoid assistant, a simple voice assistant that’s easy to use . . .That’s what led us to create “COTOREES,” taking a cue from “kotori,” Japanese for a bird that can mimic human speech.
COTOREES is a cute birdlike computer that is controlled by voice. Not too smart, but just like a pet that responds when you talk to it.They can’t do everything, but like real-world apps each character has a specific function.There’s a bird for informing you of today’s weather when you’re busy in the morning, a bird for checking words in the dictionary, and a bird for simple translations.Owing to its wireless spec, you can talk to it on the tabletop or even place it on your shoulder or baby stroller and take it outside, using the action-cam attachment.
